Alma Meyer was honored with an open house July 29 at the senior center in honor of her 100th birthday. Her children and grandchildren — Dennis Meyer, Marlene Brunner, Dawn and Jeff Larson, Lori Brunner-Buck and David Buck, Tami and Mike Bolden, Joel Brunner and his fiancé, Crisy, and Mark Brunner — were hosts. About 120 people attended, including many relatives visiting from a distance.
A farmers market meal on Aug. 1 was a benefit for Ethan Oborny and Karl Riffel to raise funds for a trip to attend the national 4-H congress in November in Atlanta, Ga. They are two of about 25 Kansas 4-H members chosen to represent the state. The basis for the awards was their record books for Ethan’s electricity project and Karl’s goat project.
Lucille Kerbs went July 31 to Abilene and accompanied Connie Thompson and Allison Sluder and Brooklyn to Salina, where they kept an appointment, did some shopping, and met Jeremy Sluder for dinner.
Phyllis and Rodney Mueller spent July 23 to 27 in Blackhawk, Colo. Others meeting them there were Ron and Jody Heath, Danielle, and Tyler of Salina and Mike and Sheila Mueller, Dane, and Saige of Laramie, Wyo. They participated in activities at Winter Park.
Donald and Carolyn Srajer of Omaha, Neb., spent the weekend visiting Tillie Hein and Jim and Kris Srajer, Grant, and Cole.
Mildred Bernhardt of Lyons accompanied Adeline Bernhardt to Marion on July 29 to attend the Backhus family reunion and potluck dinner at the Marion Senior Center. Later they attended the open house for Alma Meyer’s 100th birthday.
Nikki Stenzel of Manhattan and Lori Moldenhauer visited Frank and Anna Mae Stika on July 30.
Becky Routh, Melody, and Allison of Augusta spent the weekend with Leona Kleiber and helped her with some chores. On July 29 they all attended the open house for Alma Meyer. Paul and Edna Backhus also attended the open house.
Jane Vajnar visited Georgia Spohn on July 28.
Members of the Tampa Triple Ts 4-H Club won second place for their parade float at the Marion County Fair and the club’s scarecrow was reserve champion. Members earning grand champion ribbons included Ethan Oborny in photography and electrical display; Cory Brunzell, tomato product; Katie Evans, French bread; Addie Berens, reading project display; Darren Mueller, dairy cow showmanship; Chad Mueller, dairy cow; Cailey Barney, breed chicken; Kara Riffel, dog showmanship; Lauren Geis, breeding gilt; and Karl Riffel, goat showmanship and swine showmanship. Kyle Riffel won the round robin championship for all livestock. The following earned reserve champion ribbons: Jenson Riffel, arts and crafts; Morganne Hamm, sponge cake and clothing; Logan Oborny, electricity; Chad Mueller, dairy cow showmanship; Darren Mueller, dairy cow; Lisa Geis, horse showmanship; Kara Riffel, junior horse showmanship and market goat; Jared Barney, breed chicken; Ethan Oborny, photography and senior goat showmanship; and Karl Riffel, market goat and beef showmanship.
