There are many things wrong in the world and in our neighborhoods, but most of us have much for which to be thankful.

We live in safe, caring communities.

Most of us have what we need — a roof over our heads, clothes to keep us warm, and means to support ourselves.

Most of us can afford modern conveniences such as cell phones, iPods, and navigation systems in our vehicles.

In this country and even in our own neighborhoods, there are people who are not as fortunate.

There are children in Marion County whose only hot meals are school lunches. Who knows what they are fed on the weekends.

Hundreds of people are out of work, living as frugally as possible.

It is difficult to tell a child that there will not be any Christmas presents this year because there is no money. Every child deserves to receive a present.

This year’s list of families in need of assistance is long — longer than in previous years. Unfortunately, the list of people willing to help gets shorter every year. So, we can see the dilemma of community workers, trying to see that those in need receive a few groceries and at least something to give to their children Christmas morning.

This is where we can help. If every family in Marion County gave at least one gift or $10 to their community’s Christmas gift program, there should be enough gifts and cash to take care of families who need our help.

As we gather this week with our families and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, let us be thankful for what we have and let us be generous in sharing with others.

That would be the best way to show our thankfulness.
