Their hearts are in the right place

Peabody seniors to distribute hand-made valentines

Staff writer

Peabody Senior Center members will spend a couple hours in the afternoon on Thursday and Feb. 12 making valentines to share with others.

When asked if the cards they make are similar to the homemade variety so many of them made for the same holiday during their grade school years, member Judy Mellott said, “Yes, that is exactly how we do it.”

Residents cut out hearts and decorate them with stickers and hand-cut decorations.

“We add messages or short poems,” she said. “It is just a little something to help brighten the day a bit.”

She said that Pam Lamborn, former owner of Jackrabbit Hollow Book Store, donated valentine items to the center when she closed her business and moved to Wichita.

“We will be using the merchandise she donated when we make the cards this year,” Mellott said.

The seniors will deliver the valentines to staff members at Peabody Care Center and Westview Manor on Feb. 13 and they will pass them out to residents on Valentine’s Day. The greetings also will be delivered Feb. 13 to people in the community who receive meals-on-wheels from Peabody Senior Center.

“This is a project that is fun to do and we have a loyal group to help us get it done,” she said. “But we can always use volunteers and if anyone in the community wants to join us, we would welcome them.”
