Thelma Warkentine, 84, died Friday at Midland Hospice in Topeka.

She was born Aug. 2, 1928 in Peabody to Gilbert and Gladys (Burton) Manka. On April 14, 1947, she married Marvin E. Warkentine. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 2009, after 62 years of marriage.

Thelma graduated from Peabody High School in 1946 and attended the University of Kansas. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters: Carol Powell of Woodland Park, Colo., Paula Thiessen of Topeka, and Annette Weems of Peabody; two sons: Blaine Warkentine of Emporia and Denis Warkentine of Topeka; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers: Roy, Lyle, and Alvin Manka; and two sisters: Helen Storbeck and Marjorie Morgan.

Visitation is today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Petersen Funeral home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Peabody United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Ragland presiding. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
