Tourney draws 144 golfers

A crowd of 144 golfers took over Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course on Saturday and Marion Country Club on Sunday for the 21st annual Hillsboro-Marion 3-person Open Scramble.

The tournament filled its capacity of 48 three-person teams about 10 days in advance, Don Noller of Marion said. It has filled up in advance for a decade or more.

The courses take turns organizing the tournament, and the organizing course is the site for the first day. The organizing course also gets top billing, so in 2014 it will be the Marion-Hillsboro tournament, with day one in Marion and day two in Hillsboro, Noller said.

The tournament attracts a mixture of local golfers and those from out of Marion County. Noller estimated it was a 50/50 split this year.

Each day is divided into a morning and an afternoon session, and teams play 18 holes at each course. As a scramble, each player on a team hits a shot, then all teammates take the best shot of the three.

The winning team, with a score of 112 (30 better than par), was Travis Hett, Nick Hett, and Treg Faul. Second place with a score of 121 was Buchholtz-Watts-Vahsholtz. Two teams tied for third with a score of 122.
