Town hall meeting to focus on substance abuse prevention

Marion County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition will have a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Marion Community Center, 203 N. 3rd St., to feature a guest speaker and presentations by law enforcement.

Jared Estes of the Paige Estes Foundation will speak. He and his family were involved in an accident with a drunk driver. His presentation will focus on his loss, hardships, perseverance, and recovery.

Law enforcement officers will discuss concerns in the county about age-restricted drugs, pharmaceuticals, and illicit drugs.

The meeting is open to everyone. For more information, contact Ashlee Gann at (620) 877-0197.

The substance abuse prevention coalition is also sponsoring speakers at all five public schools in the county. Estes will speak at Marion and Peabody-Burns schools Tuesday. Motivational speaker Rick Voisin will speak today at Hillsboro schools and tomorrow at Goessel and Centre.

About the coalition

Marion County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition was established in June of 2012. It focuses on prevention of underage drinking and conducts the Communities That Care survey in all five county school districts.

It receives funding from grants and the county’s special alcohol tax fund. The coalition includes representatives from county school districts, the sheriff’s department, Marion and Hillsboro police, Prairie View mental health, Families and Communities Together, and one community volunteer.

The board continues to look for volunteers representing churches, business, and students and parents.
