Train passenger dies near Florence

A 58-year-old California man was found dead between a set of train tracks near Florence at 6 a.m. June 30. Amtrak officials have ruled the death as an accident.

According to Marion County Sheriff Deputy Jim Philpott, Fred J. Lucero of Barstow, Calif., was a passenger on a westbound Amtrak train when he left the moving train around 3 a.m. for unknown reasons. His body was discovered by a railroad employee one-quarter mile east of Florence, near Yarrow and U.S. 50.

He had boarded the train in Topeka and was heading to California.

Little information was known because of the nature of the incident.

“It’s considered a mobile scene,” Undersheriff David Huntley said. “The Amtrak train was two or three states away when the body was found.”

Philpott said the victim died on impact and was not struck by the train.
