LETTERS:   Transfer station director wants unloading policy

Marion County Transfer Station Director Rollin Schmidt asked county commissioners Monday to establish a written policy about helping customers unload waste at the transfer station.

Customers now expect help unloading, despite the fact that no other transfer station he knows of provides help, he said.

“It’s kind of our fault,” because employees have helped people unload, he said.

The reason most transfer stations do not help people unload waste is because of liability issues, Schmidt said.

Schmidt said he would draft a policy for commissioners to consider. He said he would like to implement a policy Jan. 1.

Any policy will likely include a provision to allow workers to help elderly or disabled customers unload, Schmidt said.
