Travelers appreciative

To the editor:

We would like to express our gratitude to Dave Yates of Marion, who took the time last Saturday afternoon to leave his place of business to help change a tire on our car.

We were traveling from Kansas City to our home in Great Bend. We hit an object in the road on the east edge of Marion, which later was determined to be a submersible pump of some type. We struck the pump with such force that it not only punctured the tire but also bent the rim on our right front wheel. We had a jack and spare out of the trunk and were working to change the tire when Mr. Yates arrived, asking if we were O.K. and if he could help.

He then basically took over the task. We did not protest as both of us we are fighting colds. What was most refreshing was Mr. Yates’ attitude: We were in trouble and he was there to help fellow human beings with no questions asked and no payment accepted. It was just a heartfelt act of kindness on his part.

Mr. Yates made a comment that made a lot of sense to us — “Americans need to take care of one another” — and we totally agree. We hope to pass on Mr. Yates’ good deed to another American in the near future with a helping hand or generous contribution to a good cause.

We just wanted to publicly thank Mr. Yates. In our “don’t get involved” world, it is refreshing to know that some people still care and take time to help others.
