The Hillsboro High School girls basketball team defeated Osage City, 40-32, Wednesday in Hutchinson in the first round of the 3A state tournament.

The scoring for the Trojans was diverse and unselfish; six Hillsboro players got into the scoring column and no Trojan took more than 7 shots. Senior guard Allie Faul led the way with 10 points including two 3-pointers. The Trojans advantage in long distance shooting — 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc compared to 0-of-8 for Osage City — was one of the differences in the game.

Faul also had 4 assists as part of Hillsboro’s 11 helpers in the game. Forward Krista Reimer had 3 assists.

Tena Loewen was the next high scorer for Hillsboro with 9 points and she grabbed 6 rebounds. Loewen also earned the most trips to the charity stripe, hitting 5-of-6 free throws. Hillsboro was 10-of-17 from the free-throw line in the contest.

Although Hillsboro was outrebounded, 23-20, guard Courtney Weber was the team’s leading rebounder with 7.

Addie Lackey added 6 points while Stephanie Sanders, Weber, and Callie Serene each scored 5 points. Hillsboro shot 41.9 percent from the field, holding the Indians to 37.9 percent shooting — 31.3 percent in the second half — despite 14 points from Carly Spicer on 5-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Trojans also won the turnover differential, 10 to 16. No Trojan committed more than 3 turnovers in the game.

Loewen and Lackey led the Trojans in steals with 3 apiece. Hillsboro recorded 12 thefts in the contest.

The Trojans scored almost a point per possession and Weber and Sanders contributions off the bench gave Hillsboro a 10-2 advantage in bench scoring.

Hillsboro will face Wichita Collegiate 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Collegiate defeated Riley County 50-44 Wednesday.
