CENTRE:   Troutt leads Cougars to 1st winning season in 7 years

Staff writer

Trevor Troutt of Lincolnville joined the Centre High School basketball squad in his sophomore year and played some varsity that year.

He said he loved the competition and the challenge to “try to do better than the other guy.”

The 6-4 senior ended his basketball career this season with some impressive numbers, which helped Centre to a 12-9 winning season.

He averaged 21 points per game overall and 24.6 points per game in league play. He compiled a 55 percent field goal average overall, completing 180 of 327 attempts. He shot 57 percent from the free-throw line, making 78 of 138 attempts.

Troutt also was a strong rebounder, with 200 rebounds. He blocked 22 of his opponents’ attempted shots.

Coach Gregg Wyatt called him a “work horse.”

“He was our driving force inside,” Wyatt said. “He played to win. We nicknamed him ‘the rock’ because he was someone who wanted to have the ball during crunch times.”

Wyatt said the season got harder for Troutt as time went along and opponents began to team up on him, but he stayed strong.

Troutt was a strong force in football, as well, where he helped the Cougars win a district championship. He received first team offensive and defensive honors.

He plans to participate again in track in discus and shot put.

Troutt is popular among his schoolmates. He was chosen as winter homecoming king.

He said several small colleges are interested in signing him to play football or basketball or both. He said the decision will be hard to make and he expects to take his time deciding what to do.

“This year has been the best experience in my life so far,” he said.
