CENTRE:   Undefeated Cougars roll over Altoona-Midway, 54-6

The 45-point rule shortens game by half

The Centre High School football team is heading into the home stretch of district play this week as it takes on Hartford Thursday at Cougar Field.

CHS won its fourth district game Friday by defeating Altoona-Midway on the road, 54-6. They are 7-0 overall plus a victory by forfeiture.

Despite incurring five penalties for a loss of 45 yards, compared with two penalties and a loss of 10 by Altoona, Centre dominated in the air and on the ground. The Cougars scored eight touchdowns on five runs and three passes.

Coach Kelly Steiner said the game provided an opportunity for many players to participate.

“We played well, and we are continuing to try and get better every week,” he said.

Centre had 18 carries for 228 yards. Altoona had 23 carries for 73 yards.

Leading rushers were Tanner Brunner with six carries for 88 yards and three touchdowns, and Rustyn Kerbs with five carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Brunner was 3-of-4 in passing, for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Methvin threw one completion for 14 yards and a touchdown. Altoona completed 4-of-13 passes for 43 yards. The pass was intercepted three times.

Kerbs was leading receiver with one reception for 52 yards and a touchdown. Brian Burhoop caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, and Houston Svoboda caught a 14-yard pass for a touchdown.

Three two-point conversions were completed on runs by Kristek, Kerbs, and Kordell Harding.

Cole Svoboda intercepted two passes, one resulting in a touchdown run. Shane Methvin intercepted a pass in the end zone on Altoona’s final drive, ending the game at halftime with the score 54-6.

Brunner and Harding each had 10 total tackles, followed by Jacob Jirak with eight. Harding also blocked a punt. Other tacklers were Kristek and Shane Methvin, seven each; Kerbs, six; Svoboda, four; Kyle Methvin, three; and Kodey Johnson and Ben Wirtz, one each.
