Varsity golfers in line ... for now

Sports editor

Marion High School has named its six varsity golfers.

The top three of Luke Gordon, Landon Leiker, and Lindsay Hett should stay the same throughout the season. However, the bottom three are up for grabs.

Co-head coach Tod Gordon said variables would decide who fills the fourth, fifth, and six slots each week.

The Warriors had their first meet Tuesday, and will use the same starting six Thursday at Hillsboro.

Here is a look at the starters.

1. Luke Gordon — Senior

The senior is seeking his third-straight medal at the state tournament.

However, he is going to have to do that while balancing track and field this spring as well.

It was not a problem last year, as he medaled at state golf and in pole vault at the state track and field meet.

Gordon already has signed to play golf next year at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

2. Landon Leiker — Sophomore

Leiker turned it on toward the end of last year.

After lying low at the beginning of the season, he began placing in meets as the season took full swing.

Golf is the only sport Leiker competes in at MHS, and devotes much of his time in the summer to the links.

One of his high points was shooting 89 last year at the 3A state meet.

It was the third-best score on the Warrior squad, which finished third overall.

3. Lindsay Hett — Junior

By now, Hett is used to hearing and reading about how she holds her own on the course with boys — that’s old news.

As a freshman, she won a junior varsity tournament as the only girl in the competition.

The same year she was the highest finisher in her four-man group at the state meet.

This however is her first season as a top-three golfer on her team. She could have a breakout year, and as Coach Gordon said, her weightlifting in the offseason could make a huge difference for her this year.

4. Niklas Bronnert — Senior

The exchange student from Germany has impressed coaches enough to be in the number four slot for now.

At varsity meets, the top four scores count toward team totals, meaning Bronnert could have his score count in his first U.S. high school tournament.

5. Scott Jones — Freshman

Jones, whose older brother Ryan is on the team as well, gets the nod in his first year on the team.

The talented multi-sport athlete was a regular on the junior varsity basketball squad, and even played a few minutes at the varsity level.

6. Tim Costello — Sophomore

Costello was a member of last year’s squad but did not play during a varsity meet.

He is one of three underclassmen to make the varsity roster in the opening week.

Coach Gordon said any number of golfers could be in the bottom three sports next week, and said Jordan Versch, Ryan Jones, and Adam Molleker are nipping on the heels of the current varsity golfers.

Ryan Jones also competes on the MHS track and field team, and cannot golf in the first two meets because of track.

However, he will be back next week and Coach Gordon said he could be a huge asset to the team.
