Violent offender returns to jail

A Peabody man, who bonded out of jail in March shortly after being arrested on suspicion of multiple charges during a violent domestic disturbance, is back in jail at least until his next court appearance.

Marion County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Mathew Kangas, 32, on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm, assault on a law enforcement officer, and bond revocation on April 11.

“All the April 11 charges stem from the March 15 incident Kangas was involved in down in Peabody,” Sheriff Rob Craft said. “He will have a room here at the jail until he appears in court where the judge will decide if Kangas is allowed to bond or not.”

Kangas was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, domestic battery, criminal damage to property, and five counts of aggravated child endangerment on March 17 after being released from Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He reportedly was treated for a life-threatening arm laceration he sustained after breaking a plate glass window during the March 15 incident.

As of April 17, Craft did not believe Kangas was bond eligible.
