Virginia Brown

Virginia L. Brown, 81, died July 20, 2011, at her residence in Newton. She was born on a farm Aug. 18, 1929, in rural Durham, to Edwin and Elizabeth (Zitterkopf) Garrett.

She attended Durham High School and worked with life-long friend, Marcella, at the local grocery store.

She was married to Howard Schultz for 34 years. They had three children, Sandra, Robert, and Steven. Howard and Virginia enjoyed camping and traveling in their recreational vehicle until his death in 1982.

She worked 32 years at Axtell Clinic.

On July 23, 1991, she married Bill G. Brown. They were married 20 years. She continued to travel with Bill, spending three months per year in Florida for 15 years. She helped at the Newton Public Golf Course for several years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Newton.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; brothers Harry Garrett and Don Garrett and wife Donna; daughter Sandra Entz and fiancé Robert Bryan; son Robert Schultz and wife Patricia; stepdaughters Shirley Flickinger and husband Ron; stepsons Bill Brown and wife Pam and Mike Brown; grandchildren Rusty Entz Ginger Hurst and husband Tim, Martina Tomlinson and husband Jeremy, Elizabeth Greenup and husband Chad; step grandchildren Stacey Weihe and husband Jeff, Mike Flickinger, Ryan Flickinger and wife Tonya, Laurie Lindsay and husband Brett, Melanie Roberts, Emily Hawk and husband Thomas, Molly Stillman and husband Patrick, Gabby Brown, Lindsey Brown, Patrick Brown, Ryan Brown, and Katie Brown; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Howard Schultz; and son, Steven Schultz.

Visitation was 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton. The family greeted friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A graveside committal served was 9 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery.

The family celebrated Virginia’s life with a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Newton. The Rev. James Anderson officiated.
