Wakefield overwhelms Cougars

Centre High School football team managed just two touchdowns on the road Friday against Wakefield. They were defeated, 58-14.

Quarterback Kyle Methvin scored the first Centre touchdown in the first quarter with a 1-yard run. Houston Svoboda caught a conversion pass from Methvin for 2 points to give Centre its only lead of the game, 8-6.

After three more touchdowns by the Bombers, the Cougars scored again in the second quarter with a 38-yard pass from Methvin to Svoboda. The conversion attempt failed and Wakefield led, 24-14.

Wakefield scored four more touchdowns before the game ended with a 44-point loss for the Cougars.

Both teams had 11 first downs, but Wakefield outgained Centre 239 to 88 yards on the same number of carries. Svoboda carried the ball 13 times for 39 yards, followed by Chad Mueller, with 12 carries for 38 yards.

Methvin threw 11 complete passes for 145 yards. Svoboda was the leading receiver, with six catches for 122 yards. Wakefield gained 174 yards on the ground.

The team’s record is 1-1.

Junior high

Centre Junior High School football team has a record of 2-0 after defeating Tescott on Aug. 30, 36-0, and Wakefield on Sept. 4, 20-8.
