Warriors dominated at Remington, 43-24

Staff writer

The Warriors lost to Remington 43-24 Friday at Remington. Marion was down 43-0 early in the third quarter.

Marion started with the ball and ran three rushing plays. The first two runs resulted in no gain. On the third try, Regnier was tackled in the backfield for a 4-yard loss.

The Broncos did not face similar offensive troubles. On their first drive, Jake Green jumped up over Jordan Versch to catch a 41-yard pass after running a fade route up the south sideline. The 6-foot-4 Remington wide receiver had a few inches of height on Marion’s tallest defensive back, Versch.

He used his superior height for three more catches. He caught two touchdowns, a 30-yard roll out pass up the south sideline and 19-yard deep route in the second quarter. He also converted a crucial fourth-down play by leaping between Regnier and Mikael Antoszyk and catching a deep pass. He finished the game with 129 yards receiving on four catches.

Remington finished their first drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Luke Igo up the middle. Marion blocked the extra-point kick.

On Marion’s second possession, Regnier was tackled in the backfield for a 1-yard loss and the Warriors eventually punted. The next possession resulted in three more plays for no gain and a punt. The snap on one play was fumbled but Richmond recovered. On several plays, Richmond did not have time to hand off to a running back before he was tackled by an interior Bronco defensive lineman.

“We did not block well,” Thierolf said.

Before the half was over Remington would score five touchdowns. After Igo’s run, Green caught the first of his touchdowns. Cherryholmes ran into the end zone after Green made the fourth-down catch to put Remington up 20-0. They tacked on a 2-point conversion with a pass to Matt Jacobs. Cherryholmes then threw for his second touchdown — a fade route up the north sideline to Jacobs. Igo ran for another rushing touchdown to put the Broncos up 30-0. Green finished the half with his second score, 37-0.

“That was the most lackadaisical half of football we’ve played,” Thierolf said.

Remington started the second half in a similar fashion. They stripped Williams of the ball and recovered the fumble. The Bronco possession resulted in a Cherryholmes touchdown pass to Josh Lago.

Cherryholmes ended the game with 88 yards rushing and 201 yards passing, including four passing touchdowns.

Up 43-0, Remington made substitutions and the Warriors started to gain ground offensively.

After a Regnier interception in the end zone, Richmond ran for two first downs before eventually punching the ball past the goal line. He threw the two-point conversion to Dakin Ledford over the middle.

Richmond then threw for a touchdown. He launched a bomb to Versch who was sprinting up the south sideline. Versch adjusted to the pass in the air and tipped the ball past a Bronco defender. He caught the tip in stride and ran into the end zone. Williams then ran the ball up the middle for the two-point conversion.

Replacing Richmond at quarterback, Cole Lewman ran for the final score of the game. Regnier punctuated the touchdown, running in for the two-point conversion, 43-24.

“I don’t know if you can build on that or not,” Thierolf said of the Warrior effort in the second half.

Thierolf was pleased with Williams’ effort. He said the running back learned what it took to be a varsity running back. He was hit often but adjusted, hitting holes opened by the offensive line with greater speed.

“It’s a lot faster game,” Thierolf said. “He did a good job.”

As for the Warrior effort for the entire game, Thierolf shouldered the blame for the lackadaisical play, saying the coaches did not prepare the team well enough. He expects the Warriors to play with fire against Southeast of Saline on Friday

“We’ll bounce back,” he said. “We don’t make any excuses.”
