Warriors put squeeze on tough competition at home double dual

Sports editor

The Marion High School wrestling team was busy Thursday night with three matches on its home mat.

The Warriors wrestled Hesston and Halstead for their senior night after wrestling Minneapolis earlier in the day as part of an earlier match that was postponed because of inclement weather.

At one point in the match against Minneapolis, Marion trailed just 20-18, but eventually fell, 50-18.

Twins Cody and Dillon Wildin continued their hot streaks with victories.

Cody (13-1) defeated Dusty Greer on a last-second takedown, 4-2, in the 130-pound match.

Dillon (15-0), ranked number one in the state at 140, also won his match, 4-2, against Adam Klein.

Tylor Neil (145) and Colten Johnson (152) also picked up pins during the match.

MHS head coach Chad Adkins was not happy with the match against the Lions.

His team was 4-9 in matches wrestled.

“We were very flat,” Adkins said. “They came out and pounded us and by the time we woke up it was too late. We just have to keep getting better.”

They did just that later in the night.

In the middle match, the Warriors squared-off against the Halstead Dragons.

It didn’t start well with Halstead taking a 9-6 lead, and Marion’s only points coming from freshman Cole Lewman’s forfeit victory at 112.

However, starting with Andy Shipman’s pin at 125, the Warriors strung off 27 unanswered points to take a 33-9 lead.

Cody Wildin won his match 7-3, Galen Funk picked up a pin at 135, Dillon Wildin registered a 16-second pin, and Neil (12-3) won by forfeit.

Johnson nearly notched his second victory of the night, but fell to Tyler Henning, 11-8, at 152 to end the streak.

The Warriors would only win one more individual match, a David Smith forfeit at 189, but it was enough to take the match, 39-37.

“We wrestled much better against Halstead,” Adkins said. “We have to keep pumping up our younger kids. They are improving every time they wrestle.”

That showed in the final match against Hesston as Lewman won his match 11-0 and sophomore Randy Regnier pinned his opponent in the 119-pound match.

Cody Wildin scored five points for the team with a 19-3 technical fall, while Dillon Wildin and Neil also registered pins in a 45-36 victory.

The 2-1 night put Marion at 3-6 in dual competition, as the Warriors have now won three of their past four.

The Warriors will be in Halstead Friday and Saturday for a weekend tournament.
