The Wichita Eagle has decided to eliminate non-Sunday delivery to Marion County, president and publisher Kim Nussbaum said Tuesday.
Daily subscribers received a notice of cancelation with their Saturday newspapers.
Nussbaum said about 500 daily subscribers will be affected. The Eagle has decided to continue delivering the Sunday edition because of a larger subscriber base for the weekend edition.
“It’s just not economically feasible,” Nussbaum said of the reason for eliminating daily delivery. “We used to go five miles to deliver to five customers; now we’re going five miles to deliver to one or two customers.”
Nussbaum said the organization looked into mailing papers to Marion County but decided to not offer that as an option; it would cost customers an extra $10 per week, $40 per month.
The Eagle has also pulled out of single copy sales in Marion County so the paper will not be available at vendors like Casey’s and Ampride.
Nussbaum was not sure where the closest location would be for Marion County customers to pick up a paper. She said that daily delivery has been canceled to Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody.
Nussbaum was named publisher of the Eagle Aug 8.
