Wildcat boys beat HMS twice

MMS teams 9-1 on the season

Marion Middle School A- and C-teams defeated Hillsboro Nov. 24, while the B-team fell by six in a hard-fought game.

Jordan Hett and Jacob Harper hit key free throws in the final minute of the game, as the MMS A-team held on for a 41-38 victory. The team is 4-0 on the season.

Patrick McCarty led Marion with 13 points, Jordan Hett had 10, and Ethan Hett scored nine.

The Wildcats led by eight heading into the fourth period, and let Hillsboro get as close as one in the final minutes before a three-point shot at the buzzer fell short.

Head coach Kelly Robson was pleased with the victory, but said he would like to see his team play well for an entire game.

“We haven’t been able to put together a solid four quarters yet this season,” Robson said. “The play was ragged at times, but we did what was necessary to win.”

The Wildcat C-team was in control for most of the game against the Trojans after leading 11-5 at the close of the first quarter.

MMS built a 31-19 lead at the end of three, and held on for a 35-23 victory.

Zach Hammond led all Marion scorers with nine points, Luke Steele had seven, and Nick Meyer dropped in six.

Robson was pleased with the effort of the 2-0 Wildcats.

“Everyone made a solid contribution to the team effort, and eight Wildcats broke the scoring column,” he said.

Caleb Williams had seven points and Trevor Kinnersley scored six, but the MMS B-team fell to Hillsboro, 29-23.

Marion trailed by just one after the first quarter, and 16-13 at the half.

HMS pulled away after three, leading 24-13, but MMS used a 10-point fourth quarter to cut the final score to six.

The Wildcats were only 1-5 from the free throw line, but other than that, Robson said his team hung tough despite having a significant height disadvantage.

It was the first loss of the season for the B-team after winning its first three.

The three teams have won nine of their first 10 games this season.

They played Tuesday at Remington, but results were not available at press time.

They hit the court again Thursday at Hesston.
