With heavy snowfall in recent weeks, Goessel schools have exceeded the number of cancellations they could have without making up class time.
Goessel USD 411 has used six snow days, Superintendent John Fast said. The district will definitely need to add one day, maybe two, he said. District personnel are calculating whether the second makeup day will be necessary. The district will have school Monday, which was a scheduled day off, Fast said. USD 411 Board of Education approved the makeup day at its meeting Monday.
Centre USD 397 has used nine snow days. Kansas requires schools have 1,116 hours of class time per year. It is unclear whether the district will have to make up any days.
Peabody-Burns USD 398, Marion/Florence USD 408, and Hillsboro USD 410 have some flexibility remaining in their schedules.
USD 398 has canceled 5.5 days of classes and had one day with a two-hour late start, Superintendent Rex Watson said. The district scheduled the year with about 10 flexible days, he said.
If Peabody-Burns has to add days, it will likely do so at the end of the school year, as the district dismisses relatively early for summer anyway, he said. The last scheduled day of class is May 18.
USD 408 has about two days’ flexibility remaining after canceling school for four snow days, Superintendent Lee Leiker said. The district hasn’t needed to makeup school days in recent years, he added.
USD 410 has used four snow days out of 10.5 flexible days, Superintendent Steve Noble said. In the unlikely event the district exceeds those flexible days, he sees three options to make up those required hours of instruction:
- Increase the length of the school day.
- Have school on days that are scheduled for vacation.
- Add school days to the end of the year.
