Williams places 9th at league

Staff writer

Marion senior Colin Williams overcame cold and windy conditions to take home a ninth-place medal from the 5K Heart of America league race Oct. 10 at Hutchinson Trinity in 18 minutes, 56 seconds.

“He had a very strong start and was in seventh place for half the race,” coach Dmitry Bucklin said. “At about 1.5 miles in he started getting a severe side ache and dropped to 13th. But about a half mile in he kicked it back up and had a very strong finish passing a few other runners.”

Freshman Colton Boudreaux ran the junior varsity race in 24:29.

“He did very well staying with a pack for half the race.” Bucklin said. “I liked seeing the effort he put in into focusing on the runners in front and working hard to pick them off through the race.”

Freshman Nathan Shields did not race due to injury.

Sophomore Bethany Grimmett ran the girls race in 30:45, placing 51st, and Elisa Barba Ortiz placed 47th, finishing in 28:51.

“Bethany was just a few seconds off from beating her season personal record,” Bucklin said. “She had great form and running technique through a majority of the race. Elisa also had a good race. I think she had a bit of a slow start. She realized that and about half way through kicked in and passed some runners and kept that pace through the finish.”

The Warriors and Lady Warriors do not race again until regionals Saturday at Meade. Girls race at 11 a.m. and boys at 11:40 a.m. at Meade Golf Course.
