Wreck sends 2 to jail, not ER

Two Newton men were jailed Monday after the car they were in ended up in a Peabody St. ditch.

The vehicle, a black 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, made an abrupt right turn and nose-dived off a concrete box culvert into a ditch on the west side of Peabody St. between 5th and 6th Sts. at about 4 p.m.

Marion ambulance was dispatched to the scene, as Peabody ambulance was transporting a patient to Wichita.

The driver of the car has not been identified, but the two occupants were Robert Lee Maloun, Jr. and Curtis James Janzen, both of Newton.

When Peabody police and Marion EMS arrived, the lone occupant of the vehicle was Maloun, who refused treatment at the scene. Janzen had fled.

Maloun was arrested and charged with transporting an open container in a vehicle.

When Janzen was later apprehended by law enforcement, he was arrested and charged with transporting an open container in a vehicle and possession of marijuana. The men were taken to Marion County Jail.

The Monte Carlo is registered to Jacey Moore of Salina.
