It’s not often you win more than you lose, and not claim a victory.
That was the case with Marion High School’s wrestling team Thursday at the Hoisington double dual.
In matches actually wrestled, the Warriors were 15-14, but because of open weight classes, they lost all three duals.
MHS fell to Hoisington, 54-37, Hillsboro, 36-28, and Smoky Valley, 41-30.
The Warriors won five of nine matches against Hoisington and Smoky Valley, and split 10 matches against Hillsboro.
However, Marion had four more open matches than its three opponents.
An open weight class gives an opponent six points, and if MHS had a wrestler in that class, it could result in a 12-point swing if they were to get a pin.
MHS head coach Chad Adkins said he had openings because of injuries and ineligible wrestlers.
Adkins wasn’t about to use those reasons as excuses, and was glad to see some of his top wrestlers compete hard.
Adam Regnier (135-pounds), Dillon Wildin (140), Cody Wildin (130), and Andy Shipman (125) combined to go 11-0 at the dual.
Freshmen Cole Lewman (112) and Andrew Kjellin (171) each recorded a victory, as did Levi Anderson (152) and Tylor Neil (145).
The Wildin brothers and Regnier were most impressive on the day, each winning all three of their matches.
Regnier and Dillon Wildin pinned all three opponents, with one of Wildin’s lasting only 11 seconds.
Adkins was impressed with Kjellin’s victory against Smoky Valley senior Jake Lawless.
He also took notice of Cody Wildin’s victory at 130 against former state-qualifier Nicholas Mueller of Hillsboro.
MHS took part in the Mission Valley tournament Saturday, but results were not available at press-time.
The Warriors are in action Thursday at Chase County, and will be at Hesston this weekend for a tournament.
Mission Valley
The Warriors wrestled Saturday at the Mission Valley Tournament and brought home second place.
MHS notched 149.5 points, 39 points behind champion Holton.
Both Wildins and Neil captured first place at the tournament.
Shipman took second place, Lewman fourth, and Adam and Randy Regnier sixth.
“We wrestled very well,” Adkins said. “The two Regniers were sick, but still wrestled tough.”
