Wrestlers win 7 straight

Staff writer

Marion wrestlers dominated seven straight duals last week at Eureka and Onaga to go 7-0 as a team.

“We had a very successful week,” coach Chad Adkins said. “We beat some really good teams!”

Marion started its streak by defeating Eureka and Remington Thursday. The Warriors continued to triumph Friday narrowly toping off Burlington 38-37, but going on to crush Rock Creek 49-24, smother Onaga 53-21, squash Pleasant Ridge 54-24, and rock Russell 45-28.

Adkins said the opponents at Onaga offered a lot of good competition that the team needed.

He noted 132-pounder Bryce Shults and 145-pounder Corbin Wheeler as performing exceptionally well.

“Bryce had some good matches and has gotten better,” Adkins said. “Corbin had a couple really tough kids that we wrestled earlier in the year. He took one of them into triple overtime and lost a close match.”

Adam Janzen, Marion’s 182-pounder, also wrestled three ranked wrestlers to go 3-2 at Onaga.

“Adam lost two 1-point matches,” Adkins said. “We learned some stuff that will make us better and he will be where he needs to be at the end of February.”

The Warriors take the mat again Saturday in a tournament at Chase County.

Individual results

Max Gerlach, first place at 106 pounds; Jarrett Johnson, second at 113 pounds; Cody Shipman, second at 120; Remington Putter, second at 160; Tyler Palic, 2nd at 195; and Kyle Palic, first at 220.
