Youth triathlon planned

A triathlon for children ages 7 to 14 and five-kilometer run for all ages will be held Aug. 22 in Hillsboro.

It will be the second year of the Triple Threat Triathlon, co-organizer Anna Woods said. About 20 children participated in 2008.

Organizers hope to keep children active during the summer and give parents an opportunity to participate as well, Woods said.

The triathlon will begin with a 100-meter swim at Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center. Participants will then ride bicycles four miles through town. Competitors will finish with a one-mile run ending at the sports complex, south of the pool.

After the 2008 triathlon, some parents asked if an adult triathlon would be available.

“One is in the works,” Woods said.

Marion would be a likely site, because USD 408 Sports and Aquatic Center isn’t dependent on weather, she said.

The run begins at 7:30 a.m. at Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center. The triathlon will begin at 9 a.m. at the pool. The 2008 event attracted participants from as far as Kansas City.
