Marion County residents were asked to be patient as road crews struggled with deep snow and high winds early this week following what has been described as the most severe storm of the past decade. The blizzard throughout Kansas brought central Kansas to a near standstill with heavy snow and howling winds. Main Street in Marion was piled high with snow until city crews could load it onto trucks. Snow filled the ramp and entrance way to the fully accessible entrance to the courthouse so that it was not accessible to anyone on Monday.

Marion Middle School slowly takes shape as construction workers install floors and walls in the three-story building. Mild weather helped move the project forward ahead of schedule until this week's sudden storm came along.

Carrie Wunderlick of Marion designed the 1998 Chingawassa Days emblem. Her design was selected from among dozens of entries. Chingawassa Days is set for June 5-7.

Marion Elementary teacher Trish Bandre was honored recently as teacher of the year at Marion Elementary School. The certificate honoring her selection was presented by Marj Sandberg, chairman of the MES Building Improvement Team, and 1996-97 teacher of the year Ginger Becker.

Brad Putter, Lance Rundus, and Troy Leith, all employees of Marion County Implement Co., have completed a John Deere training course on new lawn and garden products. It was conducted at the Double Tree Hotel in Overland Park.

Marion Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the sale of Kansas coverlets, attractive and useful items which will appeal to those who have a special spot in their heart for the Sunflower State.
