Investigators from several agencies were hard at work Tuesday gathering evidence related to a plane crash Saturday that killed two men. Stanley Roth, 50, and his brother Jim, 55, both of Hesston, took off from Newton City/County Airport Saturday afternoon in a 1978 Saberliner, a twinjet corporate airplane that can seat up to 10 people. Around 4:30 p.m., the plane crashed into a gradually sloped hillside six and one-half miles south of K-150, northeast of Florence.

Dennis Nichols, former director of the Morning Star Ranch east of Florence, has been hired as administrator for the City of Marion. He is scheduled to start Aug. 17.

Golfers from throughout central Kansas competed Sunday in the sixth annual couples invitational golf tournament sponsored by the Marion Country Club.

Some of the top youth baseball players in Kansas will come to Marion this week for the state 13-year-old boys' Babe Ruth tournament. The 13-year-old Cottonwood Valley League all-stars team swept the District Four championship this past weekend and receives an automatic bid. Team members include James Bina, Chris Peterson, Dustin Jost, Derek Belton, Dusty Caldwell, Nolan Hurst, Nick Conquest, Kyle Luna, Shawn Hughbanks, Curtis Gutsch, Philip Unruh, Kris Jones, and Eric Railsback. Coaches are Ray Bina and George Luna.

Dr. John C. Slifer, 97, Florence, retired doctor of osteopathy, died July 17 at Newton Medical Center.
