Marion County Mass Convention

Enthusiastic Republicans gathered in great number and all parts of the county were well represented Tuesday at the Marion County mass convention at the Auditorium. The group expressed unqualified confidence in the loyalty, patriotism and ability of delegates Wm. H. Taft and W.R. Stubbs as standard bearers for Theodore Roosevelt, president of the United States, E.W. Hoch, governor of the state of Kansas, and R.L. King's candidacy for judge of the Eighth Judicial District.

Death of John G. Roberts

John G. Roberts, of Peabody, proprietor of the Grand Central hotel, died Friday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were in Kansas City last Wednesday and Mr. Roberts fell on a stairway, sustaining severe bruises on his head and right hand, though no bones were broken. The wounds were dressed and Mr. and Mrs. Roberts arrived in Peabody Friday morning, at which place he died Friday afternoon, from blood poison.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts had been called to Kansas City on account of the serious illness of his two sisters.

Hillsboro vs. Marion

A good sized crowd came over from Hillsboro last Friday evening to witness the game of basket ball between the Hillsboro and Marion high school teams at the rink. The visitors are clever fellows and put up a good game, but on account of the limited number of boys in the Hillsboro school they were handicapped on team work, losing the game to Marion by the score of 12 to 20.

The Marion boys are a wirey bunch and lighter on their feet than the visitors, and make few fumbles.

Both teams are good losers and we hope the boys will have another go before the season is over.

Professors Cope of Hillsboro and St. John of Marion refereed the game. It was well patronized and the athletic fund considerably increased.

Taffy Pull

The young folks of the Wren neighborhood gathered at the home of Miss Addie Wren last Thursday eve and had a pleasant time pulling taffy. Those present were: Misses Pearl Yost, Eva Reed, Tillie Kelsey, Grace Buckley, Sarah Yeagley, Lennie Newhard, Jennie Hett, and Messrs Harry Clubine, Herbert and Luther Mollohan, Guy Yost, Henry Hett, Walter Clubine, John Hett, Conrad Hett, Walter Atterberry, and Ed Kelsey.

Junior-Senior Take Off

The annual Junior-Senior reception occurred Saturday evening, Feb. 22, at the residence of Mr. John S. Dean.

The house was artistically decorated in the colors of the two classes. The reception room was dainty in gold and white, and daisies, in compliment to the Seniors, while the back parlor was beautifully done in purple and cream, and violets, the Junior colors. Beneath a beautiful purple and cream arch in this room, punch was served by Misses Lucile Burkholder and Bessie Williams.

The guests found their partners for the evening in a unique manner. The boys were auctioned off to the girls, who were thus able to choose their partners for the progressive game of Stars and Stripes. The prize, a beautiful book, was won by Miss Harris. A tiny flag, the consolation prize, was awarded to Miss Fae Paddock. The guests were then entertained by a guessing contest in which William Burkholder won the prize a box of bon-bons and Gillies Hodge received the consolation, a small hatchet.

They were then invited to the dining room which was elaborately decorated in the national colors. Here an elegant three course luncheon was served by Misses Burkholder and Williams.

The guests then enjoyed an old-fashioned Virginia reel, after which they departed to their respective homes having unanimously voted it one of the most enjoyable occasions of the school year.

* * * *

A committee of the projected M.B. college was in Aulne Monday, looking over the location which has been offered them by one of its enterprising citizens.

Henry Hett of the Wilson Township sprung a surprise on his friends last week by going to Indiana on a visit and returning home accompanied by a young lady and presenting her to them as his wife. They will live on the home place. Congratulations.

The idea of paving Main street with either brick or concrete is becoming very much in favor by the property owners along this thoroughfare, Everybody agrees that it is in need of one or the other, and this point will likely be settled soon after the water works problem is safely out of the way.

Stakes were set Monday for the new street on the north of the court house, Williams street, and it is the purpose of the city council to so construct the street that it will be an honor to Commissioner J.K. Williams for whom it was named.

Now that Williams street is about to be made, the question naturally arises, how long will it be before the property owners on the south side of Main street between Third and Fourth streets will change the "rear view" to a front view, for such it will practically become on the completion of Williams street and the court house grounds.

Last Sunday Dr. Freeland lost part of his nose glasses while en route to his home from the Elgin hotel. Finder please report to the Doctor or leave at this office.
