MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL

Old Council Adjourns and Bonds of New Members Approved. Other Important Matters Started

The meeting of the council last Monday evening closed the term of the old council and opened up new fields to the new.

At roll call the following members responded: Lewis, Shanklin, Buckley, Griffith and Shahan.

In the absence of the regular Finance committee, President of the Board Lewis appointed Messrs. Shanklin, Buckley and Shahan to audit the bills presented.

The street and alley committee reported on walks and crossings needing attention at once and by order of the Council the walks and crossings at Third and North streets will be given attention.

The nuisance committee reported a drain on the hill as being offensive. The matter was referred to the board of health. An open drain as the one under consideration is conducive to a mud hole under the most favorable conditions and the better way would be to put in tiling.

The park committee reported the city building near the park needed painting and it was ordered done. Provisions were made for repairing the basin of the fountain near the front entrance. For $75, Cal Kuhn guarantees to give the city a job that will be permanent and the city attorney and city clerk were instructed to prepare a guarantee good for two years, believing that after the job had stood two years it would be permanent.

The report of Police Judge Schlingloff showed $40.50 in fines had been imposed during the month and $10.50 of this amount paid to the city treasurer, which means that a couple of parties are boarding with the county at the city's expense to pay the fine. A rock pile furnishes good exercises.

A Birthday Party

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith gave a party last Friday afternoon for little Willard "Dewey," it being his sixth birthday anniversary. The ten little people had a merry time and enjoyed themselves through the whole time.

The dining room and table were decorated in red, white and blue, and pictures of Admiral Dewey and Philippine Island views covering the walls. Dainty refreshments were served at six o'clock and each guest was given a May basket filled with candy and flowers as a memento of the occasion.

Those present were: Willard Smith, Harriet Minton, Lois Wood, Clerin Griffith, Frances King, Wesley Carroll, Margaret Mace, Marion Mace, Roy Wood and Oscar Smith.

* * * *

The young people of Aulne and vicinity will meet in the church there on Monday evening, 11th inst., for the purpose of reorganizing the Epworth League. Miss Ethel Chapman and others will deliver recitations and the pastor will make an address.

Street Commissioner Maltby reports fourteen approaches and three crossings put in in the last few weeks and as rapidly as possible other crossings and approaches will be put in.

The rain that fell Sunday and Monday came just in time and although one and one-half inches of rain fell during Monday night, the volume of water in the river was not increased.

W.O. See and family are driving around over the country in a covered wagon, on account of Mr. See's health. They were in Marion, Friday.

The sale at Reed's harness shop last Friday was well attended. John Bowlby, Lost Springs, bought the building for $800. The whips, brushes and other articles sold well.

Hillsboro

It is estimated that about 5,000 people were present last Sunday at the "Saengerfest" of the M.B. church, Hillsboro, which was held in the large campmeeting tent, which, however, could not hold much more than half the throng. The people had gathered from far and near, not only from Kansas and the neighboring states, but even from far away California and from Russia. Rev. Abraham Schellenberg, of Escondido, Calif., one of the founderss of the M.B. church, and his brother, David Schellenberg, of Russia, were also present. The program which was rendered was an excellent one. On the following day the M.B. Sunday School Convention met in the tent.
