10-and-under CVL team is second at district years ago

The 10-and-under Cottonwood Valley League all-star team took home the second place plaque July 7-9 in the Cal Ripken district tournament at Lyons.

CVL opened play against a tough home team from Lyons. At the end of six innings, the game was tied. Lyons scored a run in the first extra inning to win the game, 7-6.

CVL came back strong the next day and defeated Council Grove, the only other team in the tournament, 11-1.

The victory set up a rematch with Lyons for the championship. Once again the game went into extra innings. This time, CVL was victorious with a walk-off ground-rule double to win, 8-7.

The two played a final game to determine the champ, and it again came down to the final play. With CVL up by a run going into the bottom of the final inning, Lyons managed to score two runs and claim the District IV title.

Lyons would go on to blow through the state tournament without a loss, and are playing in North Dakota at the Midwest Regional tournament with two victories already under its belt.
