At the regular meeting Dec. 23, Marion City Commission presented outgoing co-foreman Merle Brunner with a commemorative clock in honor of his many years of service to the city. The longtime employee and volunteer fire chief retired this past week.

Mike Steinel, formerly of Marion, will perform on a national radio broadcast New Year's Eve. Steinel will be playing his trumpet in "The Guys All-Star Shoe Band," as a part of the Garrison Keillor Prairie Home Companion show to be broadcast on KMUW. The two-hour program will originate from Dallas.

Lyle Leppke has been selected as recipient of the 1996 Marion County Extension Council Appreciation Award.

A Centre High School graduate has joined the resurgent Wichita State University basketball program. Luke Utting, a 6-7 sophomore, transferred from Cowley County Community College to WSU at the semester break, the Wichita Eagle reported Sunday.

Members of the 1997 Leadership Marion County class have been announced by the Marion County Economic Development Council. Those selected from Marion are Brent Boyer, attorney with Karstetter and Klenda; Diane Hett, community facilitator; and Kodi Kelsey program manager with Western Associates. Officers for 1997 are president Stacey Stenseng, vice president Richard Drake, and secretary/treasurer Mickey Lundy.

Marion County treasurer's office has been remodeled after a portion of the office was absorbed by installation of an elevator to serve the courthouse. And, the newly remodeled courtroom is in service. A portion of the original courtroom was converted to offices and the elevator shaft, but there continues to be seating for more than 60 observers.

At the 52nd annual convention of the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, held at Wichita, Nov. 24-26, Dennis Yauk of Durham was elected as a conservation district supervisor. Youk is chairman of the Marion County Conservation District.
