Eighth Judicial District Judge Michael Powers conducted the installation Monday of Second District Commissioner Linda Peterson of Burdick, Third District Commissioner Jack Bruner of Burns, County Attorney Dan Baldwin, County Clerk Carol Maggard, Register of Deeds Faye Makovec, all of Marion; and Sheriff Dan Harper of Hillsboro. Treasurer Jeannine Bateman also was recognized, but because of fiscal year responsibilities, her new term does not begin until October.

Nick Evancho, a biology-chemistry major and a freshman at Bethany College in Lindsborg, is spending the month of January working with veterinarian Dr. Jessica Laurin at her clinic in Marion. He is doing an inter-term for three hours of college credit.

Marion "Nick" Nickelson has been elected president of Marion Chamber of Commerce for 1997. Other officers are: Doug Sharp, vice president; Brenda McGinness, secretary; and Gene Winkler, treasurer. Also on the board are Mike Classen, Janie Meierhoff, Larry Reiswig, Debbie Buchholz and Jackie Crofoot.

Marion High School graduates Jason Wheeler, Chuck Maggard, Aaron Reiswig, and Bill Griffith play for the Emporia State University "Hornets" football team. The longtime teammates find college ball far more intense than high school, but enjoy the challenge of helping the ESU team to become a football powerhouse.

Marion Unified School District board of education members on Monday unanimously approve a proposal to offer three buildings at the current Florence Middle School site to Marion County Special Education Cooperative. The proposal would lease, or deed outright the gym building, central classroom building, and administration building in Florence to MCSEC. Not included in the offer are the old stone Florence Elementary School and brick Florence High School buildings which are not owned by the district.

Norma Hannaford hosted a dinner Sunday at Kingfisher's Inn in honor of the birthdays of family members, Roger W. (Bud) Hannaford, Mary Exline, and Jill Hannaford.
