Marci Penner was the featured speaker during Monday night's annual Marion Chamber of Commerce membership dinner held at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Penner and her father, Milford, are authors of three Kansas guidebooks and are co-founders of the Kansas Sampler Foundation.

Jodi Smith, daughter of Jerry and Lois Smith of Marion, has been selected as student of the month for January by the Marion High School faculty.

Ronald and Ruth Herbel of Marion announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristy Lynn, to James Michael Gaddie, son of Jim and Mavis Gaddie of Howard. The couple plans to be married April 8 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

Centre High School's boys basketball team won the Eisenhower League Tournament championship game Saturday night in a triple-overtime game. Luke Utting was high scorer in the game with 20 points.

Josh Powers, Carrie Darrow, and Medea Fowler were top finishers in the Florence Middle School spelling bee. Darrow placed first. She and Powers will participate in the county spelling bee Feb. 8.

Tara Abbott, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Caleb Abbott of Marion, has joined the Grant Thornton accounting and management consultant office at Wichita as a staff accountant.
