Marion City Librarian Janet Marler is pictured showing Southwestern Bell representative Harry Watts and Marion City facilitator Diane Hett how the library links to Internet. Southwestern Bell gave the library a $2,500 grant to improve computer access at the library. The priority now is to raise enough funds to fully automate the card catalog system. Hett helped obtain the grant. Only 21 communities were funded from more than 200 applicants.

Marion County Commission Chairman Leon Suderman resigned effective Monday. Suderman, of rural Hillsboro, is reported to be seriously ill. He has served as commissioner since 1986.

Marion County Animal Health Clinic in Marion has installed a complete x-ray system for small-animal diagnostic work.

Heather Kohman of Lincolnville, a senior at Centre High School, was one of about 1,100 cheerleaders and 1,000 others who presented a half-time performance at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on New Year's Day.

Rowena Olsen, a graduate of Marion High School and director of library and media services at McPherson College, has received the 1996 Distinguished Service Award, top award of the Kansas Library Association.

Junior Heather Holub, sophomores Natali Toupin and Joey Smallwood, and freshman James Meier all received No. 1 speaker points in debate rounds of the Class 3A tournament Friday at Clay Center.

Jason Summerville, who graduated from Fort Hays State University in December, has joined Acree Enterprises, Inc., of Blue Springs, Mo., as a computer assisted drawing technician. Summerville is a graduate of Marion High School and the son of John and Becky Summerville of Marion.

Lucas Carlson, son of Ronnie and Susan Carlson of Lincolnville, Rod McDermott, son of Paula McDermott of Ramona and Jessica Hess, daughter of Bill and Sharon Hess of Marion, were honored recently for their 10 years of membership in the Marion County 4-H program. Their 10-year pins were presented at the 1966 Marion County 4-H Achievement Banquet.
