Marion-area Girl Scouts are distributing cookies. Top seller is Amber Richmond with 352 boxes sold. The four local troops sold 3, 226 boxes of cookies in advance.

Marion High School senior Leah Arnhold has been selected as student of the month by the MHS faculty. She is the daughter of Ken and Teri Arnold of Marion.

Burks' Tire, one of Marion's downtown businesses, announced this week that the firm has been sold to Becker Tire of Great Bend. Kevin Burkholder said the transaction will take place Thursday.

Work has started on the after-prom party held for Marion High School students, Marion Chamber of Commerce president Doug Sharp announced Friday at the regular monthly meeting.

Groundwork has begun at Marion Elementary School. Workers with Belles and Associates of Wichita are carving a new drainage ditch to provide adequate room for the new classroom wing. Plans call for the classrooms to be ready when the 1998-1999 school year begins in August.

Three Marion High School music students are raising funds for a European concert tour this summer. Lisa Buchholz, Michelle Wessel, and Andy Methvin have been invited by the Kansas Ambassadors of Music to participate in a 16-day tour. They will perform five concerts during the tour and will visit London, Paris, Venice, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany. Buchholz will perform with the vocal music choir, Wessel will play saxophone and Methvin will play trumpet with the concert band.

Marion County Hospital District No. 1 will seek a grant from the state to substantially improve efficiency of St. Luke Hospital's utility systems. Board members approved the grant application Feb. 12. The grant would pay 50 percent of the cost to improve the hot water system and the total energy system (lights and other areas). Cost is estimated at $64,000.
