Leah Arnhold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Arnhold of Marion, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., Feb. 25 through March 2.

S/Sgt. Jay Sandwell, son of Kenny and Margie Sandwell of Marion, has been named "noncommissioned officer of the year" for the 33rd Communications Squadron at Tinker AFB, Okla. He is a meteorological navigation systems specialist. He graduated from Marion High School in 1985.

KIDS Committee (Keep Improving District Schools) will hold an informational meeting at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Marion Elementary School to discuss the proposed $3.5 million bond issue which would fund expansion of Marion Elementary School and construct a new junior high school.

Centre Junior High School student Jordan Krause won the Marion County spelling bee. Steven Waner of Florence Middle School was second. Cecilia Rziha of Centre finished third.

Marion High School Queen of Courts candidates are Katie Barta-Moran, Jenny Maggard, and Melanie Cleeton. Escorts are James Grady, Joe Box, and Nick Thornbro. Crowning will be during halftime at the boys' varsity game Friday.

Former Hillsboro mayor Delores Dalke announced Monday she will be a write-in candidate for Hillsboro mayor.

Rosse and Janice Case spent Feb. 7-9 in Overland Park with Tammy and J.L. Stone, Lory and Lisa. The Cases' granddaughter, Lory, was a Queen of Courts candidate at Shawnee Mission East High School and was selected out of 14 candidates as second runner-up. The girls were escorted by their fathers.

Amelia Vinduska and Margaret Stroda visited with Sylvia Moravec at Marion Manor several times this past week. Amelia accompanied Margie and Arthur Stroda to Minneapolis where they attended the wedding of Brian Haden and Deana Henderson at the First United Methodist Church. Brian is Amelia's great-grandson.

On Feb. 3, Shirley Bowers concluded 13 years as site manager for the Friendship Meals program at Marion Senior Center. That adds up to 156 months, 624 weeks, or 3,120 days.

In sports action, MHS girls defeated Herington, 62-45. Marion boys lost to Herington with a score of 71-53. Centre High School Cougars outscored Wakefield, 62-35. CHS girls also defeated Wakefield, 75-35, as well as Remington, 90-34.
