Marion County Commission honored a longtime volunteer Monday at the regular weekly meeting. Gene Winkler of Marion was surprised with a plaque after he was named Outstanding Attendant by the Kansas Emergency Medical Technician Association. Winkler has been a volunteer EMT for 25 years.

In the spring election Tuesday, Marion Unified School District voters approved issuing up to $3.5 million in bonds for a new junior high school, and expansion of the elementary school.

A new biography of Chaplain Emil Kapaun is set for publication this summer. Author of the book, "A Shepherd in Combat Boots: Chaplain Emil Kapaun of the 1st Cavalry Division," is William L. Maher of Brookville, N.Y.

Wayne and Eula Colle returned March 26 after spending three weeks in Melaka, Malaysia, visiting their son Brent, his wife Fran, and their children Rachel, Syneva, Stefni, Jacob, and Josiah. Brent is an engineer with Conoco on the Melaka refinery project.

Marion High School teachers and students spent Thursday on a variety of community service projects as a way to thank the community for support of the high school.

The engagement and wedding plans of Denise Jane Meierhoff and A. Todd Carter, both of El Dorado, are announced this week by her parents, Thad and Janie Meierhoff. The couple plans to be married July 26 at the home of the bride's parents.

"A Boy at Play" is back on its foundation in Central Park. The sculpture, by noted Kansas artist Gino Salerno, was sawed from its base March 24. Steel rods in its legs should reduce the chance of further theft.
