Marion City Commission agreed Monday to buy industrial lots from Gerry Harris for $36,000. The price includes 31 lots on 18 acres just north of U.S.-56. It does not include the five lots already sold, or the access roads. Harris is selling his business interests in Marion. He and his family will move out of state, probably within a year or so, he said.

Top academics honors were announced Sunday at the Marion High School commencement exercises. Amanda Hansen was named as valedictorian. Katie Barta-Moran was named salutatorian. Lisa Zogelman and Jeremy May earned the outstanding senior awards.

The former parsonage for Florence United Methodist Church will move to a new location in town. Richard Wyss bought the house, offered for sale after a new parsonage was built nearby.

Larry Hatteberg, anchor for KAKE-TV Wichita, is pictured as he listens to Jessica Phillips and John Goering read their stories Thursday at Marion Elementary School. The first grade class wrote and illustrated books, then read them to parents, teachers, and patrons. Hageberg was a special guest because he also writes books. Some of his stories feature Marion County residents.

Wedding anniversary celebrations announced in this issue included the 70th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. V.R. Enos and the 40th anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mann.

An open house on Sunday will honor the Florence Public Library which is celebrating its 75th year of continuous service to the community.

Construction continues at Sunrise Apartments on Eisenhower Drive. The duplexes will provide needed housing in Marion, developers said. The units should be open this fall. They provide independent living quarters, with all yard work and other maintenance covered.
