Three Marion County men were among those who participated in the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion, or the Normandy campaign which followed. A two-page spread in this issue recounts the stories of these men: Ed Sandwell of Marion, Carlos Saenz of Peabody, and Maurice Depler of Florence

Republican primary candidate Carla Stovall formally filed Friday for the attorney general's office. Stovall is the daughter of Juanita and Carl Stovall of Marion.

A reception is set for 2-4 p.m. Thursday to honor Forrest Kelsey, longtime member of the Marion County treasurer's office. Kelsey is retiring this month.

Gas lights in Central Park have been fully repaired but the expense to maintain them is increasing, city commissioners learned Monday. Greeley Gas Co. had been providing a year's supply of mantles, and this year's supply is exhausted.

A reunion of students and teachers of these former schools, Phillips, District. 9, Grapes District 54, District 56, and Youngtown District 61, will be held June 12 at the Marion Senior Center.

Terry Conyers, formerly of Marion, has been awarded the Marshall Sowders Memorial Award by the Longview (Texas) Police Wives Association. The award was for Conyers' action as a police officer in a life-threatening situation. He is the son of Dorothy Conyers of Marion and the late Glen Conyers.

The Marion High School boys' track and field team won their regional May 21, by only one point. "It was a true team effort," said coach Jerry Smith.

A downtown Marion building has been completely refurbished, but it does not house a business. Instead is stores one of the largest privately-owned collections of sheet music in the nation. Winnie and Merv Hartke, who moved here from Hutchinson, have a collection of more than 75,000 pieces of sheet music, dating to before the turn of the century. Reuben Zerger did the restoration work. It took about two months to complete the project.
