Ella Suzanne Blount of Marion is pictured as she places an American flag at the grave of a Civil War veteran at Marion Cemetery. Blount, a third class midshipman in the U.S. Marines and a sophomore at the University of Kansas, helped her grandfather, Jack Swain, decorate veterans' graves for Memorial Day. Blount also served in the firing squad during Memorial Day services.

Marion City Commission spent considerable time Monday afternoon discussing the future of the municipal swim pool. The steel pool has served well for more than four decades but is in need of a complete renovation.

The 47th wedding anniversary of David and Shirley Bowers was celebrated at the Friendship Meals program at the Marion Senior Center.

Scholarships were awarded to three students Thursday by St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary. Diane Rziha of Tampa received the $1,000 Fred R. Knautz Scholarship and will use her scholarship funds to attend the University of Kansas as a pre-med student.; the James A. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship of $500 was given to Mattie Christiansen who attends Emporia State University and is majoring in nursing; Jennifer Maggard was awarded the $500 St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship. She plans to attend Pittsburg State University and major in biology.

Marion Elementary School teacher Patsy Waner retired this year after 35 years of teaching in Marion County schools. Of that, she taught a total of 25 years with Marion Unified School District.

The oldest trucking company in Kansas is based in Florence. Ludwig Truck Line is celebrating two anniversaries this month. It began 75 years ago and moved to Florence from Clements 50 years ago. The company, now owned by Ron "Bunk" and Kathleen Ludwig, will host a gathering for its customers later this month. The Ludwigs' two sons, Doug and Dan, also work for the truck line.
