Tampa State Bank has applied to the State Banking Board seeking approval to open a branch located at the corner of North Freeborn and East Main in Marion. A public meeting was held Monday with the state board.

Chingawassa Days performer Jamie Lee won a Wichita talent contest that could lead to a $50,000 prize and a professional recording contract. The teen-ager, whose real name is Jamie Kimberlin, won the Jimmy Dean Country Showdown, sponsored by radio station KFDI-FM.

St. Luke employees Rosanne Jordan, Mary Ann Conyers, and Paula Loveless joined a large group of penguins in the front yard of Marion County Home Care on Monday. The lawn was decorated to surprise Conyers on her 50th birthday.

A group of former Marion Elementary School personnel met for lunch at the home of Pauline and Bob Edmunds following funeral services for Frances Vinduska. Those present were Gail and Ed Seaman of Custer, S.D., Mary and Leonard White of Geuda Springs, Gene and Phyllis Enos, Sharon Kelsey, and Pam Bredemeier.

Veteran school board member Chris Costello was elected Monday as president of the Board of Education of Marion Unified School District. Kay Tajchman was elected vice president. Other incumbents Rex Savage and Doug Sharp welcomed new board members Keith Collett, Gene bowers, and Roger Hannaford III to the board for their first official meeting as board members.

Among those who enrolled for fall classes at Wichita State University are two 1997 graduates of Marion High School. Courtney Goering, daughter of Letha and Jeff Goering, Marion, will be a freshman majoring in music performance. Alesha, Tajchman, daughter of Kay and Charles Tajchman, Marion, will be freshman majoring in pre-dentistry.

Denise Meierhoff was complimented with a miscellaneous bridal shower the afternoon of July 6 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.
