The Florence community produced a highly successful 60th annual Labor Day celebration Monday. Despite warnings of scattered showers, they didn't develop. It was hot and sunny the entire weekend.

Marion Chamber of Commerce membership ambassadors presented a welcome plaque, Friday, to Brenda McGinness, owner of The Big Scoop, located across Main Street from Central Park.

Lt. Col. Wayne L. Thompson, son of Dean and Joan Thompson of Cedar Point, has received a second award of the U.S. Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. He earned the award for service as systems and assessments section chief, Operations Directorate, the Joint Staff, Pentagon, in Washington, D.C.

June Jost was the guest of honor at a surprise birthday party Sunday when his wife, children, grandchildren and other relatives gathered at Kingfisher's Inn for a dinner in celebration of his 80th birthday.

The town of Marion is featured in the September issue of "Tour Kansas Guide" which is a statewide publication headquartered at Cottonwood Falls. The issue includes articles on Marion community history, local sights, and local artisans.

"Beary Special Babies" born at St. Luke Hospital during the month of August were Tristen Michelle Miles, Aug. 3; Connor Bradley Tice, Aug. 21; Adam Joseph Makovec, Aug. 27; Sarah Lynn Tajchman, Aug. 28.

Marion High School cross country Coach Rex Wilson is confident his runners will be in the race to the very end of the season. Members of the team are Emily Costello, Ashley DeForest, Meredith Moore, Erin O'Dell, Bailey Skiles, Nicole Taylor, Tyrell Becker, Jack Branson, Chris Freeborn, Heath Garcia, Keith Goentzel, David Gore, Kevin Grady, Tyson Grimmett, Matt Schuler, Dusty Sharp, Joe Smallwood, and Josh Tajchman.
