A crew from Crown Enterprises, Claremore, Okla., was in Marion this week using a directional drilling system to prepare Marion for Southwestern Bell fiber optic cable. When full in place, the fiber optic cable will greatly improve communications service in Marion.

Mary Deane Peterson has been a familiar face at the Burdick Post Office for 35 years and Friday was her last day on the job. She will be officially retired Nov. 3.

On Thursday, three Marion County high school football teams are in the playoff hunt. Marion hosts Chase County, Centre will face St. John's Military Academy, and undefeated Goessel will host Sedgwick. Each winner will advance to play on Tuesday.

Nearly 500 mothers and daughters recently attended a Girl Scout council camp-out at Camp Wood near Elmdale. Campers from Marion included Pam and Emmy Bowers, Nina Carr, Tracy Khounsavanh, Shelli and Kylie Hardey, Sherry, Lynn and Kristy Hess, Ann and Laura Holt, Kate Irelan, Jo, Erin and Caitlin O'Dell, Nona, Emma and Jenna Parli, Judy and Maggie Powers, Brenda and Molly Rhodes, Diane, Amber and Erin Richmond, Neva and Steffanie Smith, Kay, Kari, Connie, Tiffany, Heather and Amy Tajchman. Cheri Wheeler, Skylar Bauman, and Cathy and Katie Whitaker.

Edwin and Alice Winter of rural Hillsboro will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 5 at the Herington Community Center.

Marion Arts Council elected officers at its organizational meeting Oct. 16. Those elected were Sheri Schmidt, president; Catherine Blount, vice president; Garrett Varenhorst, secretary; and Belinda Engler, treasurer.
