U.S. Senator Sam Brownback paid an unexpected visit to Marion County Tuesday morning. He was on a "listening tour" seeking grassroots information from constituents. Brownback was back in Kansas during the Christmas recess from duties in Washington, D.C.

A new superintendent for Marion Unified School District should be selected and named in February, board of education members said Monday during their regular monthly meeting. Dr. Doug Huxman has resigned his position as superintendent effective the end of the school year.

The 12th annual reunion of the descendants of the late Dr. James Moffitt and Nellie (Ucker) Moffitt, formerly of Tampa, was held over the Thanksgiving weekend at Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David, Ariz. Dan and Mary (Moffitt) McCarthy hosted the gathering and coordinated festivities for the family.

Wichita Chamber Chorale will hold its annual holiday concert Sunday in Hillside Christian Church, Wichita Marion Elementary School teacher Anita Hancock is a member of the group.

Marion County Commissioner Linda Peterson attended the National Association of Counties board of directors meeting Thursday through Saturday at Hennepin County, Minn.

Marion High School junior Bailey Skiles has been selected as student of the month by the faculty. She is the daughter of Bruce and Belinda Skiles of Marion.

City of Marion commissioners met Monday and gave tentative approval to a proposal to restore the Chingawassa Railroad car and use it for a Marion Chamber of Commerce office. The restored car would be placed on a foundation on the north side of the Luta Creek Crossing on Marion Street, across from Central Park. It would bring the office back to Main Street, which has been the desire of many Chamber members.
