The city of Florence has been awarded a $20,000 grant to clear debris clogging the Cottonwood River bridge just east of town. Florence was the only city awarded a grant. The city provided a 10 percent match, raising the total grant to $22,000.

Washburn University's basketball coach and Kansas State University's forward, Tyrone Davis, provided three days of high-quality basketball training earlier this week at Marion Basketball Camp. Washburn player Brian Henson and University of Kansas player B.J. Williams added their expertise to the dozen children attending.

A Marion County basketball player has been selected out of 330 athletes to play in an all-star game in El Dorado. Alex Utting, son of Stanley and Kathy Utting of Tampa, will play Sunday at El Dorado High School Activity Center.

An eagerly anticipated "Doll Day" has been scheduled to take place July 23 at Marion Historical Museum. Barbara Graham and Beverly Ehrlich, known as the "twin Bs," will display their collections of dolls and discuss dolls in general.

Residents of the 700 blocks of South Freeborn and South Coble met Sunday evening at the home of Earl and Eloise Mueller for their annual "get-together" and picnic dinner. Neighbors enjoying the evening were the Muellers' co-hosts, Ed and Marge Sandwell, Forrest and Bea Kelsey, Cleo Loomis, Lola Wheeler, Calvin and Frances Ridgeway, Bill and Billie Slusser and Tommy and Betty Thompson. Six families were unable to attend.

Bob and Shirley Smith were hosts over the July 4th weekend at their annual picnic for family and friends.
