Members of Florence and Aulne United Methodist churches broke ground Sunday for a new parsonage on a vacant lot at 230 West Fifth Street in Florence. The three-bedroom house with attached garage will be built by Nick's Building Center.

More than 200 people attended the open house at the Marion County Record office Aug. 7. And more than 125 of them participated in a national study on readership, administered by Eric Meyer for Marquette University. The test also was administered Thursday noon at Marion Senior Center.

A group from the Marion-Florence FFA chapter went to Dillon, Colo., Aug. 4 to 9 for their annual leadership conference. Those attending were Sharon Omstead, Jeremy May, Christina Cooper, Kristen Warnick, Nick Kraus, Tony Leeds, Mitch Kukuk, Jenny Creamer, adviser Mark Meyer and sponsor Mary Griffith.

Christopher Hett and his fiancée Kimberly Moore of Wichita were honored guests at a couple's bridal shower Sunday evening around the pool at the home of Randy and Judy Mills of Florence. Mick and Marge Summervill of Marion served as the other host couple.

Harold and Vivian Conyers and Ed and Margaret Hein returned to their homes Wednesday following an 8-day Carnival Cruise up the inside passage to Alaska.

Marion Chamber of Commerce members held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at Heartland Wireless Communications in Marion. The company, which offers cable-type television using microwaves, serves a wide area of central Kansas.

William K. "Bill" Holmes, retired manager of the Duckwall's store in Marion, died Monday, Aug. 12, following a lengthy illness.

Marion High School Swing Singers will hold a car wash Saturday at Coastal Mart in Marion. Funds raised will help pay for the group's trip to the Worlds of Fun Choral Festival this April in Kansas City, Mo.

Jennifer Backhus of Tampa returned home Thursday after spending about two weeks in England attending World Scouts '96. She was one of nine Girl Scouts and four chaperones from Marion County attending.
