Sherwin Ammeter, well-known retired Marion County Highway Department supervisor, was killed at 5:43 p.m. Tuesday when the grain truck he was driving was hit by a Union Pacific freight train three miles south and 1.5 mile west of Peabody on the Walton blacktop road.

Workers from Smith Roofing Co., Wichita, took on a tall job when they contracted to re-roof Marion County Courthouse. The old roof is being replaced as part of a renovation project to bring the stalwart old stone building into the 21st Century. Workers scrambling across the steep roof often without safety ropes, provided an awesome show of spectators.

A town-wide celebration is planned for June 20-22, 1997, in Marion, a single weekend bulging with activities to replace monthly Summerfest events. The goal is to pack the weekend with dozens of events.

20th Century Club met Sept. 3 at the Hartke Music Museum. The club was joined by Neo-Century Club members for the program by Winnie Hartke.

Bob and Anita Brookens and sons and June and Lois Jost hosted a block party Saturday evening to get acquainted with several new neighbors who recently moved to the area.

KayLeah May and Matt Kukuk were married July 13 at the home of the bride's parents, Stan and Donna May.

Centre High School senior Nikki Bina has been invited to play on the Kansas All-Star Basketball Team in the Down Under Hoops Classic in Australia next semester. Nikki is a five-foot, six-inch point guard on the Centre High School girls' basketball team.

Fruechting Farms has been named 1996 Marion County Farm Bureau Farm Family of the Year. Fawn Hett presented the plaque noting the award to Don Fruechting, Mick and Nancy Fruechting, Jennifer and Josh, and Don's father, J.L. Fruechting. Their rural Aulne farm of 2,500 acres includes wheat, corn, milo, soybeans, and alfalfa. They also operate a small feedlot.
