Old Settlers' Day scheduling and plans are just about complete. Though the day is officially Sept. 30, events kick-off at 7:30 p.m. when the Marion High School football team takes on Herington.

"Bigger and better" is the way many people describe Marion's 17th annual Art in the Park festival held Saturday. More than 15,000 people came to shop in the 196 arts and crafts booths set up in Marion's Central Park. There were 40 more than last year. Nine were from out-of-state.

Randall E. Steinert, a native of Tampa, has been named vice president and auditor for Emprise Financial Corporation. The son of Agnes Steinert of Tampa, and the late Woody Steinert, he is well known locally.

Misti Richmond and Emily Svoboda are the first students to participate in the Birthday Books program at Marion Elementary School. Parents donate a book to the library in honor of their child's birthday. A nameplate in each book gives the child's name.

Marion County on Friday received a $150,000 grant to make the courthouse fully accessible. The grant ranked ninth of 50 awarded.

A Marion coverlet is available from Kraft Korner. Owner Brenda McGinness did a great deal of research to select the images for the coverlet. They include buildings on the National Historic Register, Marion Historical Museum, and the former bridge across Luta Creek near Central Park.

Florence Middle School and the Parents Advisory Council offer a cash prize to students with no absences, and who maintain good grades. Recipients since the start of the year are Hallie Bennett, Melissa Garcia, Ryan Thomas and Blake Conyers.
