Marion's 18th annual Art in the Park is now history. The peace and tranquillity of shady Central Park gave way Saturday to crowds in excess of 25,000 people who came to attend the event.

Rain or shine, Old Settler's Day events are set for this weekend in Marion. Theme for the 85th annual celebration is "175 Years on the Santa Fe Trail."

A bronze plaque has been installed near the horseshoe pits in Central Park, a memorial tribute to the late Byron "Barney" McCarty of Florence who died this year. McCarty was an advocate of the sport of pitching horseshoes.

Pam Jones of Marion is the first official sales representative in Kansas for IOU Communications, a company which sells prepaid phone cards and cellular phones. Her brother, Mike Connor, is president of the company, which explains why Jones was first in line.

Marion City Commission heard a report from baseball coordinator David Branson on the food and beverage concession stand operated by Marion Lions Club this summer at the ball fields. Gross sales had a total of $9,255.68 with a $3.869.62 profit. They turned over one-third of the profit to the city, of $1,289.57.

Produce Derby entry this week is a 21-inch long "burpless" cucumber entered by Ed McGinness of the Aulne Community.

Six Marion County youngsters successfully completed the 4-H Shooting Sports shotgun program under instruction by John B. Garrard with help from Wayne Weber of Marion, Susan Popejoy of Wichita and Beverly Knapp of Herington. Participants were Marie Konarik, Grant Garrard, Simon Makovec, Steven Waner, William Scriven and Robbie McVey.

This year's topic for high school debaters is "Resolved: That the federal government should establish a program to substantially reduce juvenile crime in the United States." MHS debaters this year included the following: Medea Fowler, Curtis Gore, Heather Holub, James Meier, Josh Powers, Dusty Sharp, Cory Schoemaker, Joey Smallwood and Natali Toupin.
